Knee pain affects people of all ages, from young athletes through to older adults wanting to stay active.
While many people assume all knee pain is the same, there are actually several different conditions that can cause discomfort, stiffness, swelling, or difficulty moving.
Here are five of the most common causes of knee pain we see at Winston Hills Physiotherapy Centre.
1. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner's Knee)
Patellofemoral pain typically causes pain around or behind the kneecap.
Common symptoms include:
Pain when climbing stairs
Pain during squats
Discomfort after sitting for long periods
Pain during running
Contributing factors often include weakness around the hips and reduced control of knee movement.
2. Knee Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a common condition affecting the cartilage and surrounding structures of the knee joint.
Symptoms may include:
Morning stiffness
Pain during walking
Reduced mobility
Swelling
The good news is that exercise remains one of the most effective treatments for knee osteoarthritis.
3. Meniscus Injuries
The menisci are shock-absorbing structures inside the knee.
Meniscus injuries can occur through:
Twisting movements
Sporting injuries
Age-related degeneration
Symptoms may include:
Joint line pain
Swelling
Clicking
Locking sensations
Not all meniscus injuries require surgery, and many respond well to physiotherapy management.
4. Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper's Knee)
Patellar tendinopathy commonly affects:
Basketball players
Volleyball players
Runners
Gym-goers
Pain is usually felt just below the kneecap and is often aggravated by jumping, sprinting, or squatting.
Appropriate loading programs are often highly effective in managing this condition.
5. Ligament Injuries
Ligament injuries can range from mild sprains through to more significant injuries such as ACL tears.
Symptoms may include:
Pain
Swelling
Instability
Reduced confidence during movement
Physiotherapy plays an important role in rehabilitation and returning people safely to sport and activity.
When Should You Seek Help?
You should consider an assessment if:
Pain has lasted more than two weeks
Swelling continues to return
Your knee feels unstable
Walking or sport is becoming difficult
Symptoms are limiting your daily activities
